Svetlana Kuznetsova is a former French Open champion and she could well catch third seed Garbine Muguruza cold today.
Kuznetsova 13/5 to win
The Russian has had a mixed time of it of late, most recently losing in the round of 32 in Rome but seems to save her best for the French, falling at the first hurdle only once on her maiden trip to Roland Garros.
That run has included her 2009 victory, as a well as a final loss in 2006, a last four defeat in 2008 and four quarter-final exit.
Muguruza is another whose form has deserted and she is still to find her rhythm on clay this year.
She also fell in the last 32 in Rome and is still to show anything like the prowess that saw her win this event in 2016.
The French is famous for big upsets and with them 1-1 on their career head to head when meeting on clay, Kuznetsova is my tip of the day to cause a shock.
Pliskova 8/5 to win
My other bet is for Kristyna Pliskova to take advantage of Serena Williams’ lack of match practice.
Pliskova is in good shape, reaching the quarters in Prague and Nurnberg and is in need of a breakout performance if she is to move out of the shadow of her twin sister, Karolina.
Serena is a three-time Roland Garros champion but has only played competitively once this season, crashing out in the last 32 in Indian Wells and with clay her least favoured surface, this could be the Czech’s chance to shine.
