Aidan O’Brien may have suffered an odds-on reverse in the Gold Cup but it will be the shock of the meeting should his talented filly Winter get turned over in Friday’s Coronation Stakes.
Winner of the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket when sent off as an outsider, Winter proved even more impressive in landing the Irish version at the Curragh. She comes here seeking a Group 1 treble in this afternoon’s Fillies’ Group 1 (16:20) and she is 8/15 to go ahead and achieve it.
Can anything stop Winter from taking over at Royal Ascot? In truth, she does not look worth opposing in this contest but there are at least two rivals with the scope improve and at least lay down a challenge to the favourite.
The John Gosden-trained Fred Darling winner Dabyah (6/1) is one such filly, after she missed an intended run in the French Guineas in the wake of her Newbury success.
That French Classic instead went the way of Precieuse, who is 10/1 to give the ice-cool Olivier Peslier another Royal winner now.
While both have the chance to improve here, they are going to have to go some to get by Winter, whose connections have been quite firm in stating the daughter of Galileo may even herself improve again here.
