Take Midnight Tour at Wincanton

Midnight Tour is an eye-catching entry at Wincanton on Saturday and Alan King’s mare could be worth backing in her seasonal reappearance.

Wincanton stages a decent card on Saturday, with the Badger Ales Trophy (15:35) a fiendishly tough puzzle to solve and the preceding Elite Hurdle (15:00) also presenting punters with a headache.

Instead we’ll look to take an early flyer on Midnight Tour in the Z Hotels Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at 13:50.

A Class 2 event over just shy of two-and-three-quarter miles, this looks an ideal starting point for the Barbury Castle inmate who is currently 13/2 to win the race.

The current going of good to soft won’t hold any fears for a mare that impressively won at Haydock around this time last year on her seasonal reappearance on soft ground.

She had little trouble in putting six lengths between herself and Legend Lady in that contest, form that could take a boost when that rival comes out again at Fontwell on Friday for the first time since.

Midnight Tour won that race off a mark of 122 and will strip for her reappearance this season rated 147 following a progressive campaign last time around.

She ran a highly commendable Grade One OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March, behind the likes of Apple’s Jade, Vroum Vroum Mag and Limini before ending her season in some style with a commanding win in a two-and-a-half-mile Listed Mares’ contest back at Cheltenham in April.

She essentially had the field strung out behind her on that occasion and this slightly longer trip should help offset the flatter track she meets at Wincanton.

Midnight Tour has four wins from 10 starts over timber, with two further placed efforts, and based on her progressive end to last season, she’ll have fairly sound claims on her reappearance.
