US PGA Tour – The Honda Classic Preview

The cream of the PGA Tour head for Florida this week as they begin a four-week stint in the Sunshine State that brings them to the rehomed Players Championship at Sawgrass.

This week it is the Honda Classic at the PGA National, famed of course for the thrilling three-hole concluding stretch aptly named ‘The Bear Trap’.

Justin Thomas is the defending champion and 5/1 favourite following his stunning 11-birdie blitz to finish the WGC-Mexico on Sunday. The American is excellent shape to defend his crow but is understandably short in the betting as such.

Adam Scott @ 14/1

Former Masters winner Scott has been in useful form of late and the Aussie certainly has the look of a man ready for his 14th PGA Tour career win. Scott won this event in 2016 and quickly followed it up with the WGC-Cadillac Championship a week later but it has been a famine since.

PGA National has been an excellent hunting ground however, he has finished inside the top-15 in all four visits to this Florida layout since 2014. Given his recent form, Scott is a worthwhile selection to make another bid for Honda Classic success.

Gary Woodland @ 16/1

Local resident Woodland is another in-form player, with six top-tens already on his CV during the early stages of this season.

Woodland has been talking up his love of PGA National this week, a place he calls a paradise for ball-strikers. The American finished second in this event two years ago and looks sure to get in the winners’ circle again soon having knocked on the door repeatedly of late.

Billy Horschel @ 30/1

Sometimes volatile with his hot-under-the-collar style, Horschel has perhaps failed to truly build on his Tour Championship / FedEx Cup success of 2014. At just a modest 32-year-old however, time is very much on his side. Horschel finished inside the top-ten in this even in 2016 and 2017 and is renowned as being a solid performer on tough tracks when he is on his game.

With 10 consecutive cuts made, including a pair of top-25s since the turn of the year, things are trending in the right direction for the popular American.
