Liverpool welcome Norwich City to Anfield for the opening game of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
The Reds came so close last season to winning their first Premier League title but were narrowly beaten by Manchester City, who eventually finished one point higher than them.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were relentless in attack, scoring 89 goals as they finished second. That tally was only beaten by Manchester City, and the Merseyside outfit are expected to carry on where they left off last season.
As a newly-promoted side, Norwich have been tipped to struggle at the back and they could not have asked for a tougher test as they try to adjust to top-flight football once again.
While Liverpool impressed going forward last season, it was their work in defence that caught the eye more.
The signing of Virgil van Dijk was questioned at first due to the hefty price tag, but the Dutchman proved his worth as he helped the Reds concede just 22 goals last season.
Liverpool conceded the fewest goals in the division but Van Dijk was also helped along by Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip.
Norwich do have Teemu Pukki in their ranks but last year’s Championship top scorer will find life tougher in the Premier League, certainly in the first few weeks.
The Egypt international is set to start on Friday night and should be Liverpool’s ‘fittest forward’. While he spent time at the Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt were knocked out relatively early.
However, the same cannot be said of Sadio Mane’s Senegal, who reached the final last month. The winger will miss the match, while Norwich should have the majority of their squad fit and available.
Salah will be the man to watch at Anfield and it would be foolish to avoid him when looking at the anytime scorer markets.
