More derby misery for Everton

The 230th Merseyside derby takes place on Friday as Liverpool welcome Everton to Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup.

Despite the often friendly atmosphere in the stands, this is one of the few derbies that retains some of its former edge and the fans will not forgive any half-hearted performances.

It gives both Jurgen Klopp and Sam Allardyce a number of dilemmas due to their respective league positions.

Klopp has traditionally used the cups to blood youngsters, but now three years into the Reds job, he needs a trophy to convince his doubters. However, he may not see the FA Cup as worthy of risking a top-four place.

Allardyce is another known for sacrificing these types of competitions and four without a win suggests the new manager bounce he experienced on his arrival at Goodison Park is over.

Relegation fears have re-emerged in recent weeks and after not winning any of the last 20 meetings between the sides, a victory could give the Toffees the lift they need.

Doubts over Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah could blunt the Reds’ attack while Everton could recall the likes of Aaron Lennon, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Expect plenty of heat at Anfield between two rivals who always produce fireworks and, regardless of selection, both sets of fans will be demanding a performance.

It could be a tough night for the Toffees, though, especially as Liverpool have a much deeper squad. Therefore, do not be surprised if this one ends as a home win to zero at 6/5.
