Expect excitement in CL semis

Jurgen Klopp

We are really into the business end of the Champions League now with two blockbuster semi-finals on the cards, starting on Tuesday when Liverpool take on Roma.

The pair famously met in the 1984 final and the Reds will again be confident of coming out on top, although they cannot take their opponents for granted.

Roma claimed arguably the result of the season in beating Barcelona 3-0 at home to progress to the last four and, having also defeated Chelsea at the Olimpico this term, are a fierce proposition in the Eternal City.

However, it will be under the famous Anfield lights that Tuesday’s game will be played. Liverpool have only lost on home turf once this season and will be buoyed by the knowledge of being the competition’s top scorers, with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both having eight goals in the Champions League.

PFA Player of the Year Salah joined the Reds from Roma in the summer and is 12/5 to score first, while his team-mate can be backed at 17/4 in the same market.

It is sure to be an exciting evening and the home side should just shade it, with that outcome and both to score 6/4.

Then on Wednesday, Bayern Munich and holders Real Madrid meet in the most played Champions League fixture in history.

The scores are fairly even overall but it is Los Blancos who have dominated in recent years, winning their last five meetings.

Jupp Heynckes won this competition back in 1998 for Real and repeated the trick for Bayern in 2013. The Bavarians have looked a much better outfit since he returned in October and he is sure to have every angle covered.

It is no coincidence that the holders have won three of the last four editions of this tournament and they have again turned mixed performances into strong results.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of 15 goals this season means he could be a steal at 15/4 in the first scorer market, while Robert Lewandowski is 3/1.

Goals are almost guaranteed but Bayern are unbeaten at the Allianz Arena this term and it could be another case of a home win and both to score at 2/1.
