Tykes to add to Villa problems

With the Championship’s entire programme taking place on Saturday this weekend, there is pretty slim pickings for TV viewers but the one game on the box looks a pretty good one.

Barnsley against Aston Villa at 5:30 pits the division’s haves and have nots against each other. The Tykes enjoyed another stressful summer but Paul Heckingbottom again seems to be maximising his meagre resources. Villa in contrast have been rubbish, with their big-spending amounting to pretty much zilch.

Three unbeaten sets Barnsley up nicely and they are an excellent 12/5 to win, a price that becomes more attractive when you consider they have won their last three at Oakwell, including Tuesday’s League Cup tie against Derby.

They also have a good record against Villa in the recent past, taking four points off them last term and despite being the underdogs, will not be intimidated.

On paper, Villa looked ready to go all the way but have failed to date, with their progress almost as slow as their defence.

They are the 11/10 favourites and in truth they should have no issues when you look at the money it has taken to assemble their squad, including former Tyke Conor Hourihane, who is 13/5 to score at anytime.

His goals have been a rare bright spot for Villa but draws again seem to be an issue for Steve Bruce’s men, with their last three outings ending in ties.

This game in fact finished 1-1 last term, one of 14 one-pointers for the visitors during the 2016-17 campaign and that outcome is 49/20, while a repeat of that scoreline is 6/1.

However, there is just something not right about Villa and a home win just seems too good to ignore, with that result to zero an outstanding 9/2.
