Only the weather can halt England

Joe Root

Having secured a comprehensive 211-run victory in the first Test in Sri Lanka, England will be confident of wrapping up a series victory with a game still to play.

However, with the weather forecast pretty uncertain for Kandy for the match which starts on Wednesday, the Three Lions may be thwarted in their attempts to complete the job at the earliest possible mark.

England to win @ 11/10

The hosts were already up against it after being soundly beaten in the first Test, but the losses of veteran spinner Rangana Herath to retirement and skipper Dinesh Chandimal to injury have left them looking far weaker than they were in Galle.

With those absences to mind, it is hard to see anything other than another England win, unless the weather intervenes in a major way, in which case the draw at 51/20 may be a pretty decent prospect.

Dilruwan Perera to be man of the match @ 29/4

With so little experience among the Sri Lankan squad, off-spinner Dilruwan Perera will be expected to step up as he did in the first Test, when he claimed seven wickets with his off-spin.

However, whether he can do so is something of a quandary, as England had never previously faced him in a Test match and they should be much better prepared for the action in Pallekele.

Keaton Jennings to be man of the match @ 11/1

England have selection issues of their own to contend with, with Jonny Bairstow fit again for selection, while they may also be tempted to tweak their bowling attack.

One man certain of his place is opening batsman Keaton Jennings, who shrugged off a miserable run of form last summer to make 46 and 146 in the first Test and he will confident of carrying on the good work in Kandy.
