Wright backed to continue winning run

The World Matchplay gets underway this Saturday and darts fans will clock to Winter Gardens for the only major event of the calendar during the summer.

Peter Wright to win outright @ 9/1

The Scotsman is available at a tempting price this weekend thanks to his recent form. ‘Snake Bite’ has won the last three tournaments he has entered in July, while he also reached the semi-finals of the US Darts Masters.

Wright has lifted the German Masters, while also winning two Players Championship titles in Barnsley in the last seven days and he cannot be overlooked this week.

The one worry would be his form in Major Championships but at 9/1 he is definitely worth a gamble.

Rob Cross to win outright @ 7/1

The Englishman is also in the easier side of the draw with Wright and he will fancy his chances of reaching the final this month.

His form at the moment is patchy and he keeps slipping up in the latter stages of the tournament. His route towards the final should help him out, with Chris Dobey, Darren Webster, Gerwyn Price and Ian White all in his section.

Michael Van Gerwen to reach the final @ 4/5

The Dutchman is in the tougher side of the draw but it would be risky to back against him in any tournament. Van Gerwen knows how to win this tournament at Winter Gardens, having lifted the trophy in 2015 and 2016.

His form is not the best at the moment but how many times has Van Gerwen turned up to a tournament off the boil and stormed to victory.

He suffered a shock first-round defeat last year in Blackpool but veteran Steve Beaton should not pose a threat this weekend.
